Kelly Clarkson, along with fellow singer Demi Lovato, spoke frankly about her mental health and the Black Lives Matter movement
Kelly Clarkson, 38, talks about her fight against depression with 27-year-old singer Demi Lovato. The couple hooked up to the conversation via video chat during a recent episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, and they had a very frank conversation. “I love how open you are about mental health because I have similar problems and I suffer from depression,” Kelly began. “I think a lot of people, especially in the creative world or even from childhood, are trained to just keep thinking 'you can do it', especially if you are a woman, 'Don't let them see your tears.'
The former Disney star quickly rushed through the ranks of the American emerging star show Idol, which judges called her "bold" and "genuine." “You were the first idol that I ever had, and I would not be here now or even introduce myself to the person with whom I would not be so frank, vulnerable and fearless now, if I had not forced myself look at things differently,”she told Demi. The talk show host then confessed that her mental health journey and positive attitude "takes hard, daily work." She told Demi, "Even when you overcome something, they say, 'Okay, she's already overcome it." I say, “No, no, it's a daily effort, like trying to be positive … It's not a given. Like, you just finished and went to a session of magic therapy, and it's all over."
The couple also discussed the Black Lives Matter movement as protests and rallies continue to sweep the nation. “I think the first step is to educate yourself,” Demi began. “We have a lot of time now. There is no reason why we should not watch these films and absorb all the information we can about what is happening in the world. And then, from there, we saw in all the media that being silent and not being a racist is no longer enough.”
