For Matthew McConaughey, it was love at first sight.
In a new interview with Oprah Winfrey for Apple TV + The Oprah Conversation, the 50-year-old Oscar winner talks about his new memoir, Greenlights. At one point, McConaughey brags about the moment his current wife Camila Alves came into his life.
The couple first met in 2006 and later tied the knot in 2012 and they now have three children: Levy, 12, Vida, 10, and Livingston, 8. McConaughey recalls that he "immediately wanted to steal her."
“I didn’t say 'Who is this?' I said, "What is this?" McConaughey recalls of his first glance reaction to the Brazilian-American model, describing it as "gravity defying" when they first met. “We had a great relationship right away. That evening I spoke Spanish and Portuguese better than I have ever since, you know what I mean?"
“You knew right away that this was your man,” says 66-year-old Winfrey of his charming wife, 38-year-old Camila, to which the actor replies, “Well, it came from somewhere, thanks.”
McConaughey recently spoke about his affair with Camila, saying that before meeting her, he was not sure that he would ever find exactly "that" his life partner. The star remembered how she decided that he was "looking too closely" and he needed to relax a little.
“I thought, 'Wait, just wait. Be yourself. She will come if she should come. And if it doesn't, that's okay, you'll still be a good person, McConaughey,”he said. “It was then that she appeared and moved from right to left in front of my eyes through the club. It was as if she were floating. And I didn't say, "Who is this?" I said, "What is this?" And then he introduced himself."
“Since that evening, I didn't want to spend time with any other woman, I definitely didn't want to sleep with anyone. I didn't want to have children with anyone but her,”he added. "We have a love that we never doubt."
McConaughey said their three children are "very, very caring and kind people." He also explained that he and Camila - an entrepreneur, philanthropist and founder of the Women of Today (WOT) online community - agree not to protect children from the outside world or their father's fame.
“We don't want to unnecessarily isolate them from the world or from the success I had as 'Matthew McConaughey, actor, celebrity.' We let them know that a celebrity dad doesn't define a dad. Nothing of the sort, but is dad really a celebrity? Yes. At the same time, we say: "This is not our value."
“We say: our real merit lies in how we remain human, who we are as parents, how we love you, how we love each other … And mom and dad are not perfect at this, but we try to do our best,” he added.
