Johnny Depp really was not afraid to come to Toronto in support of his documentary project West Memphis… This tape tells about the famous "Trinity of Memphis": Damien Ecolze, Jason Baldwin and Jesse Misskelly, in 1994, convicted of the brutal murder of three 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Arkansas - it was subsequently revealed that they were innocent of the crime. Film shot Amy Berg with the production support of Ekols himself, his wife Lorrie Davis, the famous director Peter Jackson and Johnny depp… The latter not only supported the film, but also provided support to the three former prisoners and helped them settle in civilian life.
The film provides a fresh look at the history of the "Memphis Trinity", who served 18 years in prison for nothing and was released in August 2011. Peter Jackson and his wife took an active part in the making of the film. Fren Walsh, for which Damien expressed his special gratitude to them at the press conference. “If it weren't for them and Johnny Depp, we would have nowhere to go when I was released,” he said. “We left Arkansas as outcasts, we just fled from there … And they did not stop when we were released. If not for them, we would have nothing at all, not even clothes and a roof over our heads."

Depp explained that he came to the festival as a friend to support the film's crew and make sure the names of the three men were cleared of dirt. “I'm not here as a star, but as Peter Jackson said, a friend. If the people outside take just a minute to listen to what I am saying, or what these three guys tell them, they will learn much more about this case,”he said. The actor also stressed that he and Damien developed an instant friendship - “a kind of brotherly love and bond. When I finally saw Damien at my home, it was just a holiday. It was wonderful. We ordered tacos and other mexican food. And everything went its own way and ended with the fact that we made ourselves a tattoo.
A mini-conference on Skype was arranged with Peter Jackson - the director is filming "The Hobbit" in New Zealand. “When we found out that these people were still in prison, we were shocked,” he explained his desire to make a film about the “Memphis Trinity” after seeing the film “Paradise Lost” about them on HBO. Echols, in turn, said that his personal data still includes the murder of three people, and in order to fly to Toronto, he had to go through enhanced security measures that do not apply to ordinary passengers. That is, the bureaucratic system of the United States still considers him a murderer - and this is exactly what the documentary was made for: to speed up, finally, the process of recognizing him and the rest of his comrades innocent.
